Diabetes mellitus includes several disorders with different causes but a shared risk of chronic hyperglycemia. Type 1 diabetes results from autoimmune beta-cell destruction, while type 2 diabetes usually combines insulin resistance and progressive beta-cell dysfunction.

Acute hypoglycemia, DKA, and HHS can threaten consciousness and life. Chronic complications affect nerves, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, skin, healing, immunity, and movement. Safe massage practice depends on stability, intact tissue, appropriate pressure and temperature, device protection, and prompt referral when red flags appear.
