Chapter Summary

The hypothalamic-pituitary complex links neural information to endocrine control through portal vessels, neurosecretory axons, specialized endocrine cells, and feedback-regulated axes. The anterior pituitary synthesizes GH, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH, and prolactin, while the posterior pituitary stores and releases hypothalamic vasopressin and oxytocin.

Pituitary disorders may produce hormone excess, hormone deficiency, water-balance disturbances, mass effects, or combinations of these findings. Massage decisions depend on stability, symptoms, medications, procedures, sensation, cardiovascular tolerance, and red flags. Therapists observe, document, adapt, postpone, and refer without diagnosing or altering treatment.
